Hello friends in order to learn mobile repairing it is very important for us to have a clear understanding of different types of components that are there in mobiles & tablets.

So let's begin:

Resistor -
It's an electronic component which reduces the flow of current. These are of three types - Low Value Resistor (LVR, it's value is less than 50 Ohm), High Value Resistor (HVR, it's value is greater than 50 Ohm) and Voltage Dependent Resistor (VDR, it's value is very high and varies from Kilo Ohms to Mega Ohms).


  • Ok Condition - Set Multimeter in Ohm range and check both the tips of the resistor, if you get the same value from the both the sides then it means that the resistor is in Ok condition.
  • Faulty Condition - If you get different values or no values from both the sides then it means it's Faulty.

Capacitor -
It's function is to store the charge, to filter the signals, to pass A.C. (Alternating Current), to stop D.C. (Direct Current) & helps to prevent voltage fluctuations. These are of two types - Polarized Capacitor & Non-Polarized Capacitor.



  • Ok Condition (Polarized Capacitor) - Set Multimeter in 20k Ohm range - and check both the ends of the capacitor, if you get some values from both the ends and then within few seconds it comes back to 1 then it means it's in Ok condition.
  • Faulty Condition(Polarized Capacitor) - If you get some values from the both the sides and within 3-5 seconds the values doesn't get back to 1 or if it's shows 0 (zero) value then it means it's faulty.
  • Ok Condition (Non-Polarized Capacitor) - Set Multimeter in Continuity point and check both the ends of the capacitor, if you don't get any values then it means it's in Ok condition.
  • Faulty Condition (Non-Polarized Capacitor) - If the Multimeter keeps on showing some values from the ends of the capacitor or if it gives a Beep Sound from both the ends then it means faulty.

Inductor (Coil) -
If a current is being passed through a coil then it creates an Electro Magnetic Field around itself. It helps to filter the signal, prevents current fluctuations, stops High Frequency, passes Low Frequency.


  • Ok Condition - Set digital multimeter to continuity point and then check both the ends of the coil if you get a Beep Sound from both the sides then it means it's in Ok condition.
  • Faulty Condition - If you don't get a Beep Sound then it means it's faulty.

Diode -
There are different types of Diodes and each work according to their characteristic. For e.g. Semiconductor Diode - converts A.C. to D.C.
Zener Diode - It helps to give a desired & specific Voltage.
LED Diode - It helps in giving light.
Photo Diode - It is used in the form of a Sensor.


  • Ok Condition - Set multimeter to continuity point and check both the sides of a diode, if you get a value from one side and no value from the other side then it means it's in Ok condition.
  • Faulty Condition - If you get values from both the sides (Leakage Stage) or if you get a Beep Sound (Shorting Stage) or if you get no values at all (Open Stage) then it means it's faulty.

Transistor -
It helps in Amplification, Oscillation, Modulation, Demodulation and Switching.


  • Ok Condition - Set multimeter to continuity point and check the transistor's point from Base-to-Collector & Emitter - if you see a deflection from one side and Open Stage(meaning no values) from the other side then it means it's in Ok condition.
  • Faulty Condition - If it shows values from both the sides or doesn't shows any values from both  the sides then it means it's faulty.

Mutual Coupler(Transformer) -
It helps to increase or decrease a Voltage & also helps to filter the Frequency.



  • Ok Condition - Set multimeter to continuity point and check both the sides of the coupler, if you get a continuity on face-to-face pins then it means it's in Ok condition.
  • Faulty Condition - If you get a continuity from only one side or if you don't get continuity from any of the face-to-face pins then it means its faulty.

R.T.C. Crystal/ Crystal Oscillator -
It helps to give a stable clock signal to digital integrated circuits (generates a frequency).


  • Ok condition - Unfortunately it's not possible to check it's Ok condition with any of the normal digital multimeters.
  • Fauly condition - However if by using a digital multimeter at continuity range you get any values from the crystal oscillator then it means it's surely faulty.
Loud Speaker -
It helps to convert electric signals to sound signals.


  • Ok Condition - Set multimeter to continuity range and check the speaker. If you get a Beep Sound from both the sides then it means it's in Ok condition.
  • Faulty Condition - If you don't get a Beep Sound then it means it's faulty.

Microphone(MIC) -
It helps to convert sound signals to electric signals.


  • Ok Condition - Set multimeter to continuity range and check the microphone, if it shows a value from one side and no values (Open Stage) from the other side then it means it's in Ok condition.
  • Faulty Condition - If it shows values from both the sides or doesn't show values from both the sides then it means it's faulty.

Vibrator -
It helps to generate vibrations at the time of incoming calls/notifications or via using some apps or games.


  • Ok Condition - Set multimeter to continuity and check the vibrator tips, if it shows some values or gives a Beep Sound then it means it's in Ok condition.
  • Faulty Condition - If you don't get any values or Beep Sound then it means it's faulty.

Battery -
It helps to store charge which can then be used to operate electronic appliances. Most of the batteries that are used in mobile phones are of 3.7v. 


  • Ok Condition - Set multimeter to 20v D.C. range and check the battery, if it gives a value of 3.6v or greater then it means that the battery is in Ok condition.
  • Faulty Condition - If you get a value of less than 3.1v then it means that the battery is weak and you are supposed to charge it using a charger.
