Pearl is a natural gem that is produced from an oyster. Although the demand for pearls is increasing everywhere including India, their number is decreasing due to tapping and pollution. To meet its domestic demand, India imports a lot of pearls every year from the international market.

A pearl is produced when an external particle like sand, insect, etc. enters a shell, and the oyster cannot take them out, instead, the luminous layers get accumulated. This easy method is used in pearl production.

And it is composed of calcium carbonate, gastric substances, and water. The pearls found in the market can be fake, natural or even grown. Fake pearls are not pearls, but they are a close item similar to that of a round and a pearl-like layer. The center of natural pearls is very subtle while the outer surface is thick. It is smaller in size and its shape is not equal. The pearl created is also like a natural pearl, only the difference is that it involves human effort in which the desired shape and color are used. In India, there are three species of oyster found - Lamellides majininalis, L. Corynas and Parecia korugata, which can produce good quality pearls.

Pearls can be cultivated in at least 10x10 feet or larger pond. For pearl culture, pearl can be produced in a small pond of 0.4 hectares with maximum 25000 oysters. To start farming, the farmer has to first collect the oysters from the pond, river etc. or they can also be bought. After this, after a small operation in each oyster, it is inserted like ordinary or designer bead, like Ganesha, Buddha, flower shape etc. with four to six mm diameter. The oyster is then closed. These seams are kept in nylon bags for 10 days on anti-biotic and natural fodder. They are inspected daily and the dead oysters are taken away.

Now, these oysters are put in ponds. For this, they are hung in a nylon bag (two pieces per bag) with a bamboo or bottle support and are left at the depth of one meter in the pond. They can be followed at a rate of 20 thousand to 30 thousand hectares per hectare. The substance coming from inside starts forming around Beed, which eventually takes the form of a pearl. After about 8-10 months, the pearl is removed after rubbing the oyster.

Nowadays, designer beads are very much liked, which get good prices in the market. Exports of pearls in foreign markets can be achieved thereby making good money. Once the pearl is removed from the oyster, they can then also be sold in the market. Many decorative items are prepared by the oyster. Extraction of perfume oil is also done on a large scale. The oyster can also be sold immediately in the local market. Water purification of rivers and ponds is also being done by oysters, which can be dealt with to a great extent by the problem of water pollution.
