Is it Safe to Swallow your Mucus/Phelgm

Know the answer of this question which often comes in our mind during the winter season.

Phelgm - Homies Hacks
Winter Is Coming!

Even though the battles in Game Of Thrones seasons have been over long ago, our battle against Phelgm is about to come in this winter.

Damn this Phelgm!

How many times, especially during the winter season, we have to live with stuffy nose and phlegm that we struggle to expel?

No matter how hard we try to stay away from this but somehow we do end up in this critical situation.

It is interesting to know that the mucus, produced by the glands in the respiratory tract, under normal conditions, has a dual function and is very important for our body and for our well-being. It ensures that there is the right hydration inside the nose and throat, thereby protecting our organs from impurities present in the air we breathe.

However, this mucus can also cease to be our 'friend' thereby becoming an annoying phlegm that drips and lingers in the throat when particular conditions and pathologies take over. And unfortunately, it is not a rare thing, indeed.

Let's see, therefore, why this transformation is triggered and above all is it really safe if we swallow it on some unavoidable occasions and how can we remedy this situation by ourselves.

As explained although mucus is a normally protective coating on the respiratory membranes, phelgm is produced when the body is diseased.

Along with the electrolytes and salts present in the mucus, the inflammation also contains bacteria, viruses, dead cells and other debris. When the phlegm traps unwanted intruders, it rejects them with the help of cough.

So does ingesting this mucus or phelgm produced by the respiratory tract will harm your health?
You'll have to agree that on many occasions this question does come in our mind when we come across those unavoidable situation.

As mucus passes through the airways, swallowing it is normal, because circumstances do not always allow people to expel it. But is there any problem with that?

The short answer would be: No!

Well, not as long as the phlegm is yours.

You may not be aware but every day our body produces 75 to 100 ml of phlegm, and the amount increases dramatically when we are sick. A large part of this fluid is swallowed naturally, going straight to the stomach.

This secretion is completely destroyed in the stomach and intestines. Therefore, such practice should not worsen flu or cold. Since what was there was in our body before.

At most, swallowing your phlegm can slow your digestion a little if it is too much.

But if you get sick, pay attention to color - it may indicate a problem.

Now just don't go around eating someone else's phlegm! It's because someone else's phlegm (like other human fluids, like pus and semen) carries viruses and other microorganisms that can cause disease if they survive stomach acid and pancreatic enzymes.

Swallowing the phlegm itself may not cause any serious complications, but overproduction in the lungs can cause serious problems.

"Having a little secretion is normal, but the large amount, strong color and density are signs that something is wrong"

Note 1:
If the phlegm is pink it is an indication of a serious condition, such as heart failure.

Frequent infections of the lungs can lead to bronchectasis, a dilation of the bronchi, which in turn increases retention of secretions, facilitating new infections, ie a vicious circle. So do not hesitate to seek medical attention if you are in a recurring infectious condition.

Ways To Treat This Irritating Problem
The key to correct and effective rejection of excess mucus in the throat is to simply adopting the following habits.

Humidity in the Atmosphere
Dry air irritates our nose and throat, and causes more mucus to form as a lubricant. Put a humidifier in the room for better sleep, keeping your nose clean and preventing sore throat.

Take Steam
Let the steam enter the nose and throat, softening some of the accumulated mucus.

Drink plenty of Hot Drinks
The body must remain hydrated to keep the mucus thin.

The liquid will not only wash away excess mucus, but will also contribute to the rapid elimination of toxins.

My favourite method is to mix hot tea with honey and lemon. The acidity of the lemon melts the mucus, while the honey covers the throat with a protective layer immediately after.

Apply a Warm, Damp Cloth to the Face
With all my crazy experiments that I used to do when I was a child, this method was something which proved very soothing and comfortable and I used to think I invented it, turns out its already a very common but effective method.

Inhaling through a damp cloth is a quick way to increase moisture in the nose and throat thereby limiting the formation of excess phelgm.

Keep your Head Raised
When mucus accumulation is particularly annoying, it can help if you put some pillows on while you sleep.

Do Not Suppress your Cough
Coughing is the way the body eliminates what it does not need from the lungs and throat. If you want to cough, don't hold it! You can, however, get cough syrup at a minimal cost.

Gargle with Salted Water
A very old technique and yet very effective. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in about 230 ml of warm or hot water. This can soothe the irritated throat and help remove unnecessary mucus.

Eat a lot of Fruit
One study found that a diet high in fiber can lead to fewer respiratory problems associated with phlegm.

Note 2:
Given the wide variety of disorders that can give rise to the formation of phlegm and its stagnation at the level of the throat, in the presence of this viscous and pathological secretion, it is always good to contact your doctor to determine what is the root cause of the symptom in question.
