What Causes Kidney Stones

Know its formation reason & best practices to avoid it.

What Causes Kidney Stone - Homies Hacks
The human urinary tract is made up of the urethra, bladder, ureters and kidneys. The kidneys are an even bean-shaped organ located in the abdomen. They perform many important functions in the body, the most important of which is urine production. Urine from the kidneys flows through the ureters into the bladder in which it is collected. Urine removal occurs through the urethra.

What Are Kidney Stones?
Kidney stones, or the common name for a disease of the urinary tract (nephrolithiasis), is a medical condition in which deposits form in the kidneys or other places in the urinary tract. They give pain in the form of renal colic. Kidney stones are a condition three times more common in men than women.

How Kidney Stones are Formed?
The general rule for the formation of kidney stones is excessive saturation of the solution - in this case urine - crystalline substances such as calcium, sodium, oxalate, citrates, urate or phosphates. When the urine becomes too thick, substances that are too much in the urine will precipitate to form kidney stones.

Women are at risk during pregnancy because then often urine is retained in the urinary tract and bacterial ureter infections occur. Bacteria alkalize urine, and calcium precipitates faster in alkaline environments, which promotes stone formation.

Few of the factors favoring the formation of these stones in humans are:

• rich dairy diet (excess calcium),
• drinking large amounts of hard water (excess calcium carbonate),
• prolonged urinary tract infection,
• long-term immobilization after fractures,
• metabolism disorders
• vitamin A deficiency,
• hormonal disorders

Treatment
Treatment depends on the phase of the disease. In the event of an attack of renal colic, pain relief and restoration of urine flow are sought. In the inter-raid period, various techniques are used to remove stones. Consult your doctor for proper guidance.

The basic and common therapeutic recommendation, is to increase the fluid consumed during the day to 2-2.5 liters. It is also advisable to drink a glass of water just before bedtime.

Consuming pomegranate is also very beneficial as it is very rich in antioxidants. Pomegranate juice decreases the level of acidity in the urine, which reduces the risk of kidney stones.
The phytochemicals present in the pomegranate are also responsible for muscle relaxation in the urinary tract which facilitates the passage and elimination of kidney stones.

Diet for kidney stones
Having the result of chemical analysis of the deposit(the type of stone formed), the patient can modify his diet so that it does not contain too many foods rich in substances that form a given type of stones. Again, you should seek doctor's help immediately for proper diagnosis.

Best Practices to Avoid Kidney Stones
Preventing kidney stones is not that much complicated, but it does take some determination.

1. Is sweating a lot that much good?
Saunas, hot yoga and strenuous exercise may be good for your health, but they can also cause kidney stones.

Wait! What? Seriously?

Yes! Let me explain! Loss of fluid through sweat can cause reduced urine production. The more you sweat, the less you urinate.

That can increase the risk for mineral stones to precipitate and accumulate in the kidneys and urinary tract.

Suggestion: One of the best steps you can take to avoid kidney stones is to drink lots of water.

Thus, the amount of urine is maintained and you urinate more often. Drink more especially when you sweat a lot.

2. Don't run way from oxalate-rich foods
Naturally, oxalate is found in many foods, including fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, chocolate and tea.

This moderate intake of food, might be beneficial for people who have calcium oxalate stones, the most common type of kidney stone.

Suggestion: Eat foods that contain calcium and oxalate together. Oxalates and calcium are more likely to bind to each other in the stomach and intestines before the kidneys begin to process them. As a result, it is unlikely that calcium oxalate kidney stones are formed.

3. Get the Calcium you need
Calcium is not an enemy and thus remains essential, even in people prone to urinary stones.

Infact, getting too little calcium in your diet can cause oxalate levels to rise and cause kidney stones.

Suggestion: Keep calcium intake at the recommended limit. Reduce sodium and pair calcium-rich foods with oxalate-rich foods.

4. Lemon is your best friend
Drugs recommended by doctors are important to consume, but all of that is meaningless if not followed by lifestyle changes, especially diet. Often, one small change, can be of great benefit.

Suggestion: Maybe, you don't like its sour taste but lemons, citrus and other citrate-high fruits have the benefit of preventing kidney stones.

5. Reduce Low-Salt Foods & Animal Proteins
Reducing foods that contain lots of salt and animal protein can reduce the risk of kidney stones. By ensuring the food you consume, the risk of kidney stones that you experience will decrease.

Suggestion: Adopt a healthy diet consisting of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and low-fat dairy products.

If You Already Have Kidney Stone
As always there could be no better way than consulting the doctor first (if you experience kidney stone) and following diet plan that he/she suggest. The important message here is to get a personalised diet plan as per your health condition and follow the medication as prescribed.
