How to Shut Up Your Neighbour's Dog

Follow these Steps to Stop the Dog from Barking at You

How to Shut Up Your Neighbour's Dog

I believe I may have touched a sensitive nerve for many victims by sharing this topic. But I assure you that the motive is only to help you.

If the dog continues to bark regularly especially on those few important times such as when working from home or while watching your favorite movie or when on an important business call, etc. then even the greatest dog lover will lose patience at some point if the noise level from the neighbor's place continues.

Some dogs bark on some specific events for e.g. when the doorbell rings, or when some person is running through the stairs, or when the dog sees a cat or a pigeon. However, at times some dogs seem to bark loudly on just about anything or any unfamiliar action or things that they see.

Yes, barking is part of the dog and is very common but only if they bark occasionally where anyone could understand. However, if the dog keeps on barking on every minute events for e.g. when you're giving water to your plants, when you're having a cup of tea in your balcony, when you just happen to pass by the dog - that too for over a long period of time, then this really creates a problem.

However, following the below simple tricks, you should be able to reduce the volume to a tolerable level and can in fact create a better atmosphere in your neighborhood.

Discuss The Issue With Neighbour

Discuss The Issue With Neighbour
This is practically the very first step that you must follow. Unless you share the problem with them how can you be so sure that they are aware of it?

Sure you may think that they are the dog owners and that they live there with their dog so they must know how much their dog barks in the first place. However, what you may not realize is what if their dog barks at you only when the owners are not at home and you happen to be on your balcony at the same time with your tea.

Also, many times owners themselves do not realize the damage to health and rest their dog may be causing to others. Since they happen to live with the dog for so much time they usually develop a bond with the dog and also tend to develop a habit of tolerating the barking and become accustomed to it not realizing that the same cannot be the case with the people living nearby.

So, if you talk to them calmly and with a conciliatory spirit, then owners of the pet will often seek a solution to the problem.

Seek Support With Other Neighbours

Seek Support With Other Neighbours
If you tried discussing the issue with the dog owner and still experience the same problem occurring then you could seek support from other neighbors, and then try to raise the problem with the dog owner, this time with the presence of a witness.

What If The Dog Owner Don't Know How To Calm His Dog

What If The Dog Owner Don't Know How To Calm His Dog
Maybe after discussing you come to know that the owner did in fact tried to calm the dog but seems to be unaware of the right techniques. In such a case try to discuss the possible reasons why their dog continues to bark so excessively.

Remember, uncertainty, fear, frustration, or boredom are among the most common causes of excessive barking.

Only when the owner knows the cause of the barking can he work specifically to calm him down. Probably by having more activity with the animal through playing, longer walking or exercising while cycling, etc.

Or if you are sure what the problem is, there is nothing wrong with giving advice.

Blocking The Vision

Blocking The Vision
If you notice the dog begins barking only when he sees you in your balcony or backyard, then it could be that the dog is trying to protect his side of the territory.

So a great idea to try is to simply block his vision by using a fence screen, plant, or trees, so that, he is unable to see you and this could solve the problem easily.

Why Not Become Friendly With The Dog

Why Not Become Friendly With The Dog
A dog is always protective of its family. So perhaps when he sees you he thinks that you are a danger to his family. So, in order to make him stop barking, you need not be seen as a danger. And in order for this to happen, you can politely ask your neighbor if you can meet their dog and maybe play with him a little.

After the dog gets used to your presence, and your scent he will probably stop treating you as a threat to his family and would eventually stop barking at you.

Formal Complaint

Formal Complaint
If you have tried all the above, and still experience no positive results or if the dog owner himself doesn't show any interest in calming his dog's nuisance. Then the last nuclear option left is to file a formal complaint regarding the noise pollution to the concerned authorities, so that, they can themselves take appropriate measurements.
